LAPD Community Advisory Board
For several years WORDE has been involved with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in an advisory capacity. Past engagements have included cultivating best practices within the Muslim community to address social conflicts, and improving dialogue between the Muslim community and law enforcement.
In 2010, WORDE was formally invited to serve a two-year term the LAPD Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau (CTCIB) Community Police Advisory Board (C-PAB). The purpose of the CTCIB C-PAB is to enhance the strategic planning of the LAPD by partnering with citizens from community-based organizations, religious groups, academic institutions, media outlets, and businesses/corporations, in order to harness the influence of intellectual networks in the LA region. Community policing is based upon a partnership between the police and the community whereby the police and the community share responsibility for identifying, reducing, eliminating and preventing problems that impact community safety and order. As one of the twelve C-PAB board members, WORDE advises the LAPD on issues relating to global terrorism, counter-terrorism trends, and religious extremism.
Montgomery County Faith Community Working Group (FCWG)
In Montgomery County MD, the County Executive recently established the Montgomery County Faith Community Working Group (FCWG), which is chaired by WORDE President, Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi. The FCWG is an association of government officials, police officers, youth activists, faith leaders, and gang prevention experts who have committed to addressing the precursors of HVE from a faith community perspective. This will be the first community-led engagement with the area’s law enforcement, specifically designed to build awareness about the risk factors for radicalization and to eventually train mentors to intervene with at-risk individuals.
