In 2011 WORDE established a new cultural center for the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area.
Located in Gaithersburg, MD, the ICC is a forum where people from all traditions can gather to promote principles of peace, social harmony and plurality through prose, music, meditation and sacred movement.
The ICC is a unique space for cultivating positive social networks — where the community can foster a sense of belonging and youth can channel their energy into peaceful, productive outlets. To date, youth have participated in a range of activities at the ICC including community service and interfaith social action initiatives. Our “Youth Against Hunger” campaign has become a popular monthly event that brings together youth from diverse faith groups to make sandwiches for homeless shelters.
WORDE also organizes educational programsfor the community at the ICC. In its first year, WORDE has hosted workshops, seminars and lectures on a range of topics from countering extremism and domestic violence, to the effects of 9-11 on youth. Upcoming events will also focus on meditation, peace and conflict-resolution, cultural pluralism, religious tolerance, civic engagement, and women’s issues.
The 33,000 square foot building is available for cultural and religious events, conferences, book launches, poetry readings, graduation celebrations, weddings, family events, and other community events. To reserve the space, please contact Samia Haque (samia@theicc.net).
