CVE Panel at the Cato Institute

On December 14, 2016, Assistant Chief, Luther Reynolds (Montgomery County Police Department) presented on his department’s involvement in the BRAVE Program as part of a panel discussion on countering violent extremism at a CATO Institute conference. Co-panelists included Michael German (Brennan Center for Justice), Maya Berry (Arab-American Institute), Arjun Sethi (human rights lawyer, and Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center and Vanderbilt University Law School) and Sharia Mayfield (Staff Attorney, Oregon Department of Justice).

In his comments, Mr. Reynolds discussed how the BRAVE Program, originally developed by WORDE, acts as an extension of community policing efforts to build trust with diverse communities to enhance public safety efforts. “Countering Violent Extremism,” he said, “requires trust, and the communities that need us the most, but trust us the least.”
